BOUNTIFUL HAMMOND
HP Anglers hosted by the Hammond River Angling Association set out on the beautiful Hammond River for the second tournament of the season, as we paddled, walked, lugged, and tried to find any water to put a PDL Drive and rudder down to move from spot to spot. Despite the wind, mist, low water levels, the abundance of rocks at the launch, and the inevitable downpour at 2:00pm, the HP anglers proved once again that the Hammond will not disappoint at one of the KEY stops in the series.
That being said, 12/16 eligible species were still caught in these conditions, proving that our anglers know what they are doing and can still land key species, despite the conditions. With 201 fish registered on the day, not one from the field of 36 was able to topple defending champ Travis Melanson, who managed to find the largest trout on the day, along with 9 other species to give him a total of 127.50 points claiming top spot again, winning a custom Atlantic Laser Works plaque, Doiron Outfitters YETI, and the Minnow Tackle Shop prize pack for defending his title. Not far behind him was the 2023 rookie of the year, Nick Colpitts winning his first top 3 plaque with a 2nd place finish. Colpitts had 124.50 points, just 3 points behind Melanson, finding 10 species including 3 key ones in trout, gaspereau, and sucker. Nick won the Maritime Madness Hot Sauce prize pack and he also split the X Zone LuresTHE ROD GLOVE target species yellow-gas lunker combo with 20.25 inches. Peter Nyenhuis returns to the podium while making his way into the HP record books, a slimy surprise 30.50-inch eel helped him get to 114 points, taking home 3rd place and 13 Fishing Canada rod. Rene Pelletier lands in 4th finding 9 species for 107.50 points, while Bryan Cawthra lands a 19.50-inch sucker that helped him secure 5th with 97.50 points. Damien Dorcas was the top youth angler on the day in 7th place.
Guillaume Cote was the other winner of the X Zone Lures target species lunker points, Dave Owen won the Walters Baits box draw. Roy Butler was the winner of the Malone Auto Racks kayak cart draw. We'll run it again tomorrow as we travel to new waters on the back half of our double-header in Fundy Shores, which will also kick off the Discover SW New Brunswick Showdown.
