HOOK AND PADDLE OPEN
The second annual Hook and Paddle OPEN has come and gone -- August 31st witnessed 34 anglers catch 136 fish, and compete for 1 prized spot to represent their country in the 2025 World Kayak Fishing Championships or PanAm Kayak Fishing Championships! Last year we witnessed Rihards Dimpers win the inaugural event and will be travelling Sept 9-14 to Bracciano Lake, in Italy, which we will all be cheering him and his teammates with team Canada, as they go for GOLD!
This summer, we had 27 New Brunswick anglers, and 7 Nova Scotian anglers travel to Mactaquac, NB to put their skills to the test. Anglers tried their best during the fog, overcast, sun and windy whitecaps to find, land and register 9 fish on the board for the win. They were looking for a combination of 3 chain pickerel, 3 smallmouth bass and 3 largemouth bass.
This year it was the 2024 runner-up Rene Pelletier who was the cream of the crop as he rose to the top of the podium with a commanding 125.75 inches of fish, catching a 24 inch chain, 3 big smallies, and 3 largies to capture his spot in the 2025 championships. Congrats to Rene, and we look forward to cheering you and the rest of the Canadian Team next summer! Alisha Hines was near the top of the leaderboard most of the day, and seemed to have no issue finding bass to submit, but she fell just shy with 117.75 inches, claiming the silver medal, while catching 7 eligible fish plus a few extra. Jeff Rathburn joined us for his first kayak competition and came very close to capturing silver with 116.75 inches including 2 chain, 3 largemouth and 2 smallmouth, taking home the bronze. All 3 anglers take home some beautiful custom HP OPEN plaques created and designed by Atlantic Laser Works -- the detail and quality of these awards will be a memorable keepsake, as true works of art!
Andrew Wadden with 100.75 inches, and Gilles Pelletier with 94.00 inches round out the top 5 respectively - we want to thank all our the anglers that travelled from NS, and the many who joined the Hook & Paddle community for the first time at this open event. Shout out to our sponsors Walters Baits, Dead End Lures & Tightline Anchor.
