HP OROMOCTO DINO'S FROM THE JOHNNY DEP(TH'S)
Waking up on the morning of a Hook & Paddle back-to-back weekend is no easy task, especially when the weather is predicting Hot & Sweaty conditions, toss in some bass boats, local boat traffic, and a bunch of kayak anglers looking for 10+ species.. put it all together and you have the making of another beautiful Hook & Paddle competition!
Oromocto Recreation & Tourism is no stranger to the HP community, as it's the only tournament location that we have been to each of the years since HP conception, and it's not just a beautiful launch spot, community support like our tournament sponsor GRIMROSS -- but it's the number of catchable species available within the boundaries. Today as anglers were putting their game plans together, they likely were looking at what species they still needed to catch, or upgrade for their overall scores.. and many important decisions would have to be considered on a tournament day like this.
With the second stop in the Fredericton Capital Region Tourism Clash -- from the 43 anglers registered, and 234 fish caught measured, and released, there was one angler who made all the right decisions when it came to clutching up TEN species on the day -- Peter Nyenhuis put up a rock solid total of 147.25 species with his 10 species on the day, including one species he needed to put on the board, a 35.75-inch sturgeon. Peter won $250 as the top angler today generously donated by our tourney host Grimross Brewing Co., he also takes home his first 1st place Atlantic Laser Works plaque of the season, as well as a Doiron Outfitters custom HP Yeti. Not far behind was his brother Gage Nyenhuis, who also managed to land a sturgeon and seven other species for 124.50 points, winning the top youth Walters Baits angler trophy, and Minnow Tackle Shop prize package. Bryan Cawthra was the only other to land a sturgeon on the day, which bumped him into 3rd with 121.75 points on the day, taking home a 13 Fishing Canada rod. Travis Melanson found himself in 4th place with 119.50 points, winning the Tightline Anchor as well as the X Zone Lures THE ROD GLOVE white perch + eel target species prize with 36.50 points. Dylan Wood had another great finish in 5th with 101.25 points winning the Lucky Strike Bait Works prize pack.
Congrats to Andrew Craig on winning the Rapala #CrushCity VMC Hooks Lunker Bass Prize pack with an 18.75-inch smallmouth. Justin Hines won the 506 Tackle Supply terminal tackle box, Stan Matthews on winning the Walters Baits tackle box, and Travis Melanson on winning the Suspenz Storage and Transportation air cart!
Gage Nyenhuis continues to lead the HP Youth Division with 868 points, Alex Hickey is in second with 796, and Damien Dorcas is in third place with 763. Travis Melanson leads the HP Bass Series, followed by Dylan Howell and Bryan Cawthra.
Gage Nyenhuis has now moved into the lead for the 2024 HP Overall standings -- Gage now has 15/16 species collected and leads the pack with 296 points on the board! Brother Peter is right behind him with 283 points and a couple more species to find. Bryan Cawthra moves into 3rd with 279.75 points, followed closely by Travis Melanson with 262.25 and Jean Muzzerall with 251.50. There is still lots of time to find fish with the remaining tournaments left, but we are looking forward to Hook & Paddle ~ Chipman ~ where one lucky angler will walk away with a new Garmin LIVESCOPE as the draw for that tournament, which is brought you by Terry Lemon & Minnow Tackle Shop!
