WILD WOODSTOCK
Welcome to Woodstock, NB - host of the 5th tournament and halfway point of the summer series -- with Wild Weather predictions, anglers were wondering what might be in store for the day, so most came ready for rain, and wind.. many were not prepared for Tornado warnings, and Lightning storms! Luckily as anglers arrived to a warm welcoming host and launch site, the rain cleared up, and we had overcast to sweltering as we finished the day.
48 registered anglers, our largest field in the summer so far, would have to choose if they wanted to head into the Meduxnekeag River or dare traverse the mighty Saint John River. As they were just heading out within 30 minutes one of our anglers landed a 40-inch muskie right near the launch.. and that set off what would be a wild day!
With many prepared to spend the time needed to hunt and maybe put themselves in a position to get a Muskie to bite on the day, many were also focusing on landing big and small bass as well, as most of the usual species we find were hiding from likely all the predators, and anglers. However, HP participants still managed to catch-photograph and release over 150 registered fish on the day!
The surprise was that 5 anglers were blessed to put a muskie on the board on the day, which was clearly the game changer as those 5 finished in the top 5 on the day. Justin Hines was Justin-credible landing a 40-inch muskie, along with smallmouth bass, yellow and white perch giving him 93.50 total points. He took home an absolutely beautiful Atlantic Laser Works laser cut plaque, custom Yeti from Doiron Outfitters,, and a brand new Scotty Fishing Products 131 camera boom for his victory. Jean Muzzerall managed to set a new Hook & Paddle record length, Muzzerall previously held the record with a 43.75 sturgeon but upgraded that to a 46-inch Muskie in Woodstock, combined with his smallmouth and yellow perch it was enough to claim 2nd on the podium - winning the Minnow Tackle Shop prize pack with 80.50 points. Matthew Stiles landed his first muskie ever within the first hour of the tournament, then went on to improve it with his second muskie ever a 43-inches -- his 78.50 total points were enough to propel him to his first Atlantic Laser Works plaque for the trophy wall, along with a 13 Fishing Canada rod! Brothers Peter and Gage Nyenhuis both found muskie as well on the day Peter finished 4th with 76.50, and the Lucky Strike Bait Works prize pack, while Gage finished 5th with 74.75 points and the Dead End Lures prize pack and Walter's Baits trophy as top youth angler. Congrats to all the anglers who managed to land some great fish over this double-header weekend!
Travis Melanson was the winner of the Biggie-Smalls X Zone LuresTHE ROD GLOVE target species prize pack - with a 19.25 smallie and a 4.5 smallie - the difference was 14.75 inches. He also took home the Rapala #CrushCity lunker bass prize for the bass series with his 19.25 inches. We were happy to have one of our local sponsors Watershed Fishing Apparel & Co. on-site providing 5 anglers with some awesome clothing gift bags. Lucky Strike Bait Works rep was there to congratulate Chris Arnold on his draw prize win, Kathryn Graham won the 506 Tackle Supply terminal tackle box, and Logan Young took home the Walters Baits tackle box.
Gage Nyenhuis had a great weekend yet again, and improved his lead in the youth division with 608 points, while Alex Hickey moves into second with 573 points, leapfrogging Damien Dorcas in third with 543 points. Melanson takes an early lead in the Bass Series with 19.75 points, Ben Woo was able to find a 19-incher and is in 2nd with 19.50 points, while there is a 4-way tie for 3rd. Von Paving HP Elimination bracket has been updated heading into our next tournament at Hook & Paddle ~ Harts Lake ~ Peter Nyenhuis moves into 1st overall with his Woodstock Muskie giving him 216 points already on the season. Gage Nyenhuis follows his brother up the ladder into 2nd place with 209.25 points, while Jean's record-setting catch bumps him into the top three with 209 points. Travis Melanson is 4th with 201, while Bryan Cawthra finds himself in 5th with 195.50 points.
The Woodstock Tourism & Events-NB First Town Social alongside West NB Tourism combined to provide one lucky winner with an Old Town Fishing 106 PDL as a draw prize --- and that lucky person was Allan Marsh -- congrats to all our winners! Special thanks to Barb Sharp, Clean Drain Dry, Smith's Dance Academy, and Nathan Robinson Photography for making it a great day for our first tournament in Woodstock, NB.
